The mouth-nose protection, surgical mask or often also called hygiene mask, prevents the escape of viruses and bacteria via the mouth. The filter membrane in the mask thus primarily protects people in the wearer's environment from infection. To a certain extent, the hygiene masks also protect against the entry of potentially dangerous bacteria. We recommend the use of a medical mouth-nose protection, which are usually also used in doctors' offices or in clinics. In the online store of Heros Hygiene you will find high-quality and inexpensive protective masks of the IIR type - comfortable and pleasant to wear.

Explanation of terms

In the field of masks, a wide variety of terms are used, which can be confusing when ordering or selecting the right product. Basically, a distinction is made between three types of masks, which are colloquially called by different names:

- Textile masks / community masks
- Medical masks / surgical masks / OR masks / hygiene masks / NMS
- Respirators / FFP masks (FFP1, FFP2, FFP3)

Textile masks are usually not tested and can be sold without a filter insert. These masks can be washed and reused, which makes them an ecological alternative. However, their protective effect is limited and there is no certification, which is why they are not suitable for the medical and public sectors.

The conventional mouth guard or mouth-nose protection is mainly designed to protect the people around. To some extent, these masks also protect the wearer himself. They are often worn in surgeries or clinical facilities for patient protection or by the public in pandemic situations.

The respirators without valve have the highest protective properties for the wearer, as well as his fellow men. FFP masks with a valve, on the other hand, only protect the wearer from bacteria and viruses, as the exhaled air is not filtered. This allows for easier breathing, but is not suitable for protecting the people around them.

Hygiene masks

Within the medical hygiene masks there are different type designations, which define certain properties. According to the European Standard EN 14683:2019, surgical masks are divided into three different types:

- Type I hygiene masks (BFE ≥ 95%)
- Type II hygiene masks (BFE ≥ 98%)
- Type IIR hygiene masks (additional protection against liquids from outside)

The bacterial filtration efficiency or BFE (bacterial filtration efficiency) value defines the filtration characteristics of a hygiene mask. Masks with a type I must achieve a filtration efficiency of at least 95%. Masks with a type description II, on the other hand, must be able to demonstrate a value of at least 98%.

In addition, a hygiene mask may also have a letter R as an additional designation. This letter stands for "resistance" and describes additional protection against the ingress of liquids from the outside. In surgical areas, this was introduced primarily to prevent the entry of blood droplets, but is also effective against other fluids.

Advantages and disadvantages of a Type IIR mask

In the field of protective masks, Type IIR masks (often referred to as surgical masks) are the safest and highest quality option. Due to their resistance to moisture, they can usually be worn for longer periods of time (up to 8 hours); other hygiene masks lose their effectiveness more quickly due to moisture. In contrast to a respirator (FFP mask), hygiene masks can be produced more cheaply, which is reflected in a clear difference in price. Most often, the products are sold in dispensers of 50 pieces. Hygiene masks are generally characterized by their high wearing comfort and are pleasant to wear even over a long period of time. The disadvantage of each hygiene mask is that they do not completely close off the area around the nose and mouth and thus unfiltered air can escape or enter.

How are hygiene masks worn correctly?

When using an oral-nasal protector, it is essential that it is also worn over the mouth and nose. The effectiveness cannot be guaranteed if it is worn incorrectly. Additionally, care should be taken to wear the mask as close as possible to the skin on the face for optimal filtering performance. The colored side of the hygiene mask should always face outwards as a matter of principle; if you are unsure, you should refer to the packaging information. The metal clip should always face upwards and be pressed over the nose. When the mouth/nose protection is discarded, it should only be touched by the rubber bands and disposed of directly in the trash. Be sure to thoroughly clean or, in the best case, disinfect hands after disposing of the mask.

Can hygiene masks be worn more than once?

Hygiene masks are single-use products, so multiple use is not recommended. Type IIR masks are 3-ply and can be worn for up to 8h, but follow the product specific recommendations. Other hygienic masks should be discarded as soon as they become damp from breathing, as much of their effectiveness is lost. Under proper storage conditions, most hygiene masks have a shelf life of 5 years. Refer to the product-specific packaging information or data sheets.

Areas of application

Typically, Type IIR masks are used during surgical operations or other procedures where splashing of fluids may occur. They are also popular and used in medical offices or clinics. On the other hand, they can also be used during increased bacterial contamination in all public areas. In pandemic situations, these hygiene masks protect your fellow human beings extremely effectively and by using them on a large number of people, the spread of pathogens can be efficiently prevented. Their scope of application is very flexible due to their low price and ease of use. For current and possible regulations in the public sector, you can refer to the latest information from the Federal Office of Public Health FOPH.

Quality control

To ensure the health of the user and his environment, the masks are strictly controlled. Hygiene masks are medical devices and must therefore be CE certified. In addition, the type designation "IIR" is regulated and documented in EN 14683:2019. To ensure the quality standard, this should always be observed and checked when ordering a product. The certificates and data sheets of the individual masks can be downloaded directly from our online store.
