Surface disinfectants
What are surface disinfectants?
Surface disinfectants, also called surface disinfection agents, are chemical solutions, sprays or foam systems that specifically kill or inactivate microorganisms on surfaces in order to prevent the transmission of pathogens and create hygienically clean work and utility areas. Surface disinfection is a central component of modern hygiene concepts in hospitals, nursing facilities, gastronomy, laboratories, businesses and increasingly also in private households. When used, the focus is not only on removing visible dirt, but above all on reducing bacteria, viruses and fungi that can be transmitted through contact, aerosols or touch.
These disinfectants differ from pure cleaning agents in that they actively act against pathogens, and they are formulated to be both effective and as material-friendly and skin-compatible as possible.

- Public or shared sanitary areas (e.g. shower, bathroom and washbasin)
- Floors in areas with high-risk patients
- Medical devices (e.g. control elements, displays and instruments)
- Surfaces that are in direct contact with patients (e.g. treatment chair and examination couch)
- All surfaces that have come into contact with blood or other bodily excretions
In our range you will find various highly effective surface disinfectants and disinfectant solutions. We offer practical disinfectant wipes as well as spray bottles so that you are equipped for all purposes. Surface disinfection
Disinfectant wipes
The wipes are already pre-soaked and are offered in dispensers or pouches. They are ready to use immediately and are therefore ideal for the quick disinfection of table surfaces, keyboards, door handles, door knobs, workplace displays and other surfaces. They can also be used in medical facilities, for example to disinfect surgical instruments or surfaces. The greatest advantage of wipes lies in their quick and universal application as wipe disinfection.
When using surface disinfectant wipes for uncomplicated rapid disinfection, it must be ensured that the surface is completely wetted with the disinfectant. More detailed instructions can be found on the product packaging.
Disinfectant sprays
In addition to disinfectant wipes, you can also order surface disinfectants in spray bottles from our shop online. A spray or spray disinfection is particularly suitable for more extensive cleaning, for example when the entire work area must be disinfected after a medical procedure. These products are also ready to use and can therefore be used immediately. Container sizes range from 250 ml (perfect for on the go) up to 1000 ml (with spray attachment). In addition, for many products you can also purchase canisters (5L, 10L or 25L) from us in order to refill the spray bottles yourself.
When using disinfectant spray, we recommend applying it directly onto the surface. The product should then be spread under light pressure with a paper towel until the entire surface is wetted. For more detailed instructions, the manufacturer’s information in the package insert or on the packaging should be observed.
Liquid surface disinfectants
Liquid surface disinfectants are among the most frequently used forms of surface disinfection and are ideal when larger areas or more structured surfaces need to be cleaned in a hygienically safe manner. Before use, visible dirt should always be removed first, for example with a clean, damp cloth or mild cleaning agent, as organic dirt can impair the effectiveness of the disinfectant.
Explanation of terms
When selecting the right product for your application, it is important to pay attention to certain terms. Regarding effectiveness against viruses, a distinction is made between “limited virucidal” and “virucidal”. Limited virucidal agents are effective only against enveloped viruses, whereas virucidal agents also kill non-enveloped viruses. Another term that often appears is “fungicidal”. This defines an active substance that kills fungi or spores. “Bactericidal” refers to an agent that damages bacteria to such an extent that they are killed.
Alcohol-based surface disinfectants
Alcohol is the most widely used active ingredient for disinfecting surfaces. Alcohol-based disinfectants contain a proportion of water that allows the alcohol to penetrate the cells of bacteria, where it destroys them. When using such a disinfectant cleaner, it is important that the surface material is alcohol-compatible and therefore cannot be damaged by the product.
Do not disinfect the following surfaces with alcohol-based products:
- Plexiglass
- Acrylic glass
- Alcohol-soluble paints (if unsure, test on an inconspicuous area)
- Artificial leather
In order for bacteria not to survive, alcohol-based products must contain a high proportion of ethanol. This usually also entails a certain flammability, which is why the safety instructions on the packaging should be carefully observed. With proper use and storage, however, these products can be used without concern.
Alcohol-free surface disinfectants
For surfaces that are not compatible with alcohol, alcohol-free surface disinfectants are suitable. The modes of action of these disinfectants can vary greatly. However, they are always based either on killing or displacing bacteria. The package insert and product description should always be consulted regarding contact time and effectiveness of ready-to-use solutions.
Contact time
Contact time is decisive for selecting the right disinfectant and is comparatively short for alcohol-based products. However, it varies depending on the product and may differ in length according to the mode of action. For exact information, refer to the specific product details of the concentrate.
Shelf life
Disinfectant wipes in sealed pouches or dispensers can usually be stored for several years. Once the package has been opened, they should be used within approximately 3 months to continue guaranteeing their effectiveness for surface disinfection. It is crucial that dispensers, especially with frequent use, are always properly closed again so that they do not dry out.
FAQ | Frequently asked questions about surface disinfectants
How long must a surface disinfectant act?
The contact time depends on the product, but is often between 30 seconds and several minutes. Exact information can be found in the product information.
Can I use alcohol-based disinfectants on all materials?
Alcohol-based products are effective, but for sensitive materials it should be checked whether they are compatible.
What does “limited virucidal” mean?
This designation indicates effectiveness against enveloped viruses, for example coronaviruses or influenza viruses.
How do I store surface disinfectants correctly?
Store them in a cool, dry place and keep them closed to maintain their effectiveness until the expiration date.
