What is an FFP2 mask?
An FFP2 mask is a filtering half mask designed to protect the respiratory tract from harmful particles. It filters at least 94 percent of all airborne particles and complies with the European standard EN 149:2001+A1:2009.
FFP2 masks are used both in everyday life and in professional or medical environments. The difference from a simple surgical mask lies in the significantly higher filtration performance and the tighter fit.
FFP2 masks provide reliable protection against solid and liquid aerosols and are an important part of personal protective equipment.
Application and protective effect of FFP2 masks
They protect against harmful particles such as dust, smoke, bacteria, or viruses. Especially indoors or in close contact with other people, the protective effect is particularly valuable.
It is important that the mask fits properly. Only then can it deliver its full filtration performance. Even small leaks reduce protection significantly.
A properly worn FFP2 mask provides a high level of protection, both for yourself and for others.
Can you sleep with an FFP2 mask?
We generally advise against sleeping with an FFP2 mask. During sleep, breathing changes and oxygen supply can be impaired due to the increased breathing resistance. The masks are intended for active use, not for nighttime wear.
FFP2 masks are not designed for continuous use during sleep and should not be worn overnight for safety reasons.
How to wear an FFP2 mask correctly
How do you put on an FFP2 mask correctly?
- Clean your hands thoroughly before putting it on.
- Place the mask so that it fully covers your nose, mouth, and chin.
- The nose clip must fit well and be pressed firmly.
- Finally, check the fit by exhaling strongly. If air escapes at the edges, it does not fit tightly enough.
Glasses wearers in particular benefit from a well-fitted nose clip, as it reduces lens fogging.
Only a properly worn mask provides reliable protection.
How long can you wear an FFP2 mask?
On average, an FFP2 mask can be worn for up to eight hours at a time. If it becomes damp or dirty, it should be replaced earlier. In Switzerland, the FOPH recommends replacing masks after single use, especially in medical settings.
For private use, they can be reused under certain conditions if kept dry and stored hygienically.
The wearing time depends greatly on duration of use, environment, and humidity.
Care and reuse of FFP2 masks
Can you reuse an FFP2 mask?
In professional settings, FFP2 masks are considered disposable. In everyday life, however, they can be reused several times if handled carefully. They should be stored in a dry, clean place after each use, ideally in a breathable container.
It is important not to wear the same mask on several consecutive days. Rotating between several masks that have each been well ventilated is recommended.
Careful drying over 5 to 7 days is considered a practical approach for private reuse.
Can you wash or disinfect an FFP2 mask?
This is a very common question.
No, an FFP2 mask must not be washed or treated with disinfectant. The fine filter layers would be damaged, losing their protective function. Heating in the oven or microwave is also not recommended, as the materials may deform or ignite.
Instead, passive drying at room temperature in a dust-free place is recommended.
Water, alcohol, or heat damage the mask and make it unreliable.
Why does wearing FFP2 masks cause skin irritation?
Many people’s skin reacts sensitively to the close contact with the mask material, especially when worn for long periods. This can cause irritation, pimples, or redness. The reason is moisture, friction, and restricted air circulation.
You can prevent this by protecting the skin with a light moisturizer before wearing and avoiding makeup. We recommend skin-friendly mask models with soft inner lining, which are also available in our range.
The right mask can significantly reduce skin irritation.
FFP2 masks for specific groups
Not every mask fits every person. For children there are smaller models, but the protective effect depends heavily on the fit. People with chronic respiratory diseases should seek medical advice before use.
For glasses wearers, we offer special masks with anti-fog function and an extra-soft nose clip, which increase wearing comfort.
The choice of the right mask should always be made individually.
What is the difference between FFP2, P2, KN95 and N95?
All of these masks offer similar filtration performance but are based on different standards. FFP2 is the European standard, P2 comes from Australia, KN95 from China, and N95 from the USA.
For sale in Switzerland, it is important: Only masks with CE marking according to EN 149 are officially approved. At Heros Hygiene, we ensure that all our FFP2 masks are CE-certified and tested.
Not every mask with a similar designation automatically meets European safety standards.
