There are different possibilities and tests to detect an infection with the Covid-19 virus (often also referred to as Corona). Basically, a distinction is made between antigen rapid tests and PCR tests. These differ mainly in the time required to detect a result. In the case of the corona rapid test, the result is obtained after 15-30 minutes, but it can rather be described as a snapshot.

With the PCR test, the result can only be determined in a professionally equipped laboratory and this process usually takes about 12-24 hours. The result can then be viewed online or is sent to the patient by mail or phone. The PCR test is the most accurate test for determining a coronavirus infection, which is why a positive rapid antigen test is usually checked again with a PCR test.

In addition, there is also the antibody test, but this only determines whether a person has already been infected by the virus. In this case, antibodies have already formed in the body, which can be determined by this test. However, the time of this infection cannot be determined, nor can the protection against re-infection. These tests are used to collect studies on the contamination, in which large numbers of people are tested in order to determine what proportion has already been affected by Covid virus.

Who can perform a rapid test?

The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) recommends that a rapid test be performed only by trained professionals. The test consists of two phases, first a thorough nasopharyngeal swab is taken, in the next step the swab is dipped in a solution to determine the result. The margin of error in this procedure is high for non-professionals and can lead to falsified results.

When should a self-test be performed?

Self-testing is intended for individuals who wish to test themselves quickly of their own volition. When doing so, you should not have contact with Corona cases or have symptoms of Covid-19 disease. If you have symptoms of the disease, you should always get tested by a specialist at a pharmacy, test center, doctor or hospital. Likewise, do not self-test before visiting high-risk patients or medical facilities. The high error rate in self-testing can lead to false reassurance and subsequent infections.

Self-testing generally provides a less accurate result than rapid antigen tests or PCR tests. Therefore, if the test result is negative, you should continue to follow the hygiene rules. So, it is possible that you are infected with Covid-19 virus despite a negative self-test.

What should you do if the result is positive?

If the self-test indicates a positive result, the result must be confirmed as soon as possible by a PCR test. This must be carried out by a specialist. If this test is also positive, you must go into isolation. However, you should obtain information about the exact determinations from the testing specialist. You can find the exact determination on the FOPH website or by calling the FOPH hotline, where you can be informed directly.
